A Bachelor degree is the most common Australian degree and recognised worldwide, and are delivered primarily by Universities. Usually taking 3-4 years to complete, Honours may be awarded with a Bachelor degree, with an additional year of study for 3 year Bachelor programs, which usually involves a research project and completion of a thesis.
A Graduate Diploma or Certificate are similar to Diplomas or Certificates but must be completed by a student with a Bachelor degree or higher. Certificates usually take 6 months for completion, Diplomas usually taking 12 months. Graduate Diplomas and Certificates are awarded by both Universities and Higher Education institutions.
A Master’s Degree is an advanced academic degree usually undertaken for two years, with Bachelor degree qualification a prerequisite. Within the particular field of study, graduates are deemed to possess advanced knowledge of a specialized body of theoretical and applied topics; high order skills in analysis, critical evaluation or professional application; and the ability to solve complex problems.
A Doctoral degree is the highest qualification awarded by Universities in Australia. Usually a Doctorate requires the completion of a major thesis which is assessed externally by subject matter experts. Holders of an Australian Doctoral Degree are qualified to teach at University and other research institutions. Holders of this type of degree are allowed to use the title ‘Doctor’.
